So you've painted the walls, put up your artwork, carefully chosen your curtains and even colour coded the books on the shelf, yet for some reason the room still doesn't look quite right. The pain of constantly walking past it, peering through the door, shaking your head and moving on to the fridge to eat off the emotional trauma of it all. Ok so maybe thats an exaggeration, but in my world an ill fitting room literally keeps me up at night!
To save you (and I) from those puffy eyes or weight gains, heres what I've found to be the top three reasons of why a room can feel 'off' and what you can do to fix it...
1. Not Enough Balance - You either have too much on the walls and not enough on the floor, or too much on the floor and not enough on the walls. This automatically creates a top or bottom heavy room and its one of the biggest reasons rooms look off. If its too bottom heavy Add in art work, hanging lights or even paint the roof a different colour and watch it transform!
2. Not Enough Texture- I can't stress the importance of building up textures in a room, without varying textures you're left with a stark, boring and sometimes cold space. This is such an easy fix, layer an extra blanket over the end of a bed, frame art in wooden frames and put a plush rug on the floor. Voila!
3. Nothing Connects - An eclectic room can be beautiful, but there needs to be something that connects, be it a colour, pattern or theme; otherwise you are just left with a confused space. If this is whats going wrong then start with a colour palette cure, another super easy solution. Will it be all bright colours or all pastels? See in the below picture how this room has an array of objects, textures and patterns, but everything is done in a bright primary colour so it works, throw some pastel in there and you're left with a hot mess! Make sense?
So there you have it, hopefully another blog post closer to saving the world of bad spaces. Now go forth and decorate!
