In just about every blog post I write I stress the importance of a feature wall, but until now I've neglected to say why this wall is a decorators best friend!
There are so many reasons to love a feature wall, they allow for an injection of personality to any space, upgrade the entire look of a room with minimal spend, create a focal point and depth and it can be easily changed if you get bored of it. Whats not to love?
Theres slightly more to it though than just slapping on some paint, first you need to choose the right wall, normally the one that holds the focus in the room. If you can, stay away with walls that have windows or doors. In kids rooms I almost always make the feature wall the one that is the backdrop to the main piece of furniture, like the bed or cot.
Ok so you've chosen the wall, now on to the fun part - the design:
- Wallpaper: This is by far my favourite. It is safe to say I am obsessed with wallpaper. If you are drawn to drama, then choose something dramatic. If you want soft and calming, you can go that way too.
- Wall Murals: Wall murals can be breathtaking. If you're confident enough you can even do one yourself.
- Decals: Another one of my favourites. A third of the cost of wallpaper but almost the identical desired effect.
- Picture Gallery: Create a wall of memories with this one. I always suggest going with black and white imagery to avoid the wall looking cluttered.
DIY Paint Pattern: A great way to make an impact on a small budget.
Solid Colour: Probably one of the easiest versions of the feature wall, painting one solid colour can be tasteful yet dramatic. Just remember the rule of darks versus lights; a dark wall will draw the eye in and can sometimes make the room look a bit smaller, lighter walls make the room look slightly bigger.
So there it is, all the ways to incorporate my feature wall fetish, now go forth and decorate!
